Antibacterial activity of chitosan from freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium dayanum (Henderson, 1893) against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus

ABSTRACT:

In the present study, chitosan has been extracted from M.dayanum. Further the antibacterial
activity of different concentrations (25%, 50%, 75%, 100%) of chitosan was tested against
Gram-positive bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538) and Gram-negative bacteria,
Escherichia coli (ATCC8739) by Agar Well Diffusion method. The result of the present study
suggests that chitosan has concentration dependent antibacterial activity against both bacterial
strains indicating its possibility of using as antibacterial agent.
